Sears
Opening in 1965, the former Sears building in Kitchener was one the biggest and best examples of mid-century modern architecture in the region. It was the anchor tenant at Fairview Park Mall for longer than I’ve been alive. The precast concrete columns were its most defining feature, not to mention the green glazed brick that adorned the first floor. The mall went through a major renovation and in early 2018 Sears closed permanently. An attempt to give the building heritage status to save the structure ultimately failed and most of it was demolished and replaced with… a brick wall. Some sections of the building were kept, but the soul of the original structure is sadly gone.
